Skateboarding---Not a crime at the Waikiki Sandbox!
House of Flys Fights for the Right to Skate in Waikiki
For
as long as can be remembered, skateboarding has been a crime in
Waikiki. As the international birthplace of surfing, Hawaii’s influence
has made riding boards commonplace throughout the world. Surfing paved
the way for skateboarding. Today, skateboarding is a recreation, sport,
and a lifestyle, as well as an economical and pollution free form of
transportation, yet it is illegal to ride in Waikiki.
Through
a series of shows every third Saturday at the Waikiki Sandbox called
Once-A-Month PUNK, House of Flys is working to raise awareness for this
issue. They are striving to get 10,000 signatures on a petition to make
skateboarding legal once again in Waikiki. They will also be
interviewing tourists on video about their opinions on the matter to
present to city officials. Finally, House of Flys will be pushing to
build a skate park in Kapiolani Park
Since
the beginning of skateboarding, punk rock music has been the soundtrack
for this lifestyle. And it has been the punk rockers themselves that
have elevated skateboarding to this next level. It is now time for both
to have their day. It is the goal of Once-A- Month PUNK to
decriminalize skateboarding in Waikiki and jam some punk rock down your
throat. House of Flys and Stunt Dog Productions have come together at
the Waikiki Sandbox to create a space to see the latest skate videos
and hear Hawaii’s best live punk bands. At the Waikiki Sandbox
skateboarding is not a crime, but not showing up is.

Büsekrüs is a local rock band that musically dances on the
lines of modern Pop-Punk, Emo and Alternative. (Think All Time Low, Plain White
Tees , Cartel). Büsekrüs is made up of three pieces: brothers Marcus Busekrus (Lead vocals/guitar) and LJ Busekrus (backup
vocals/bass) as well as long-time friend Mike Jones (drums). Hailing from
Kailua, these boys have been playing music together off and on since 1998, but
only formed their current project in 2006. They love writing and performing
music and plan to make their part time passion into their full time careers in
the very near future.
With one Hawaii Music Award winning album under their belts
and another album in the works right now (due out in Sept, 2009) as well as one
US West Coast Tour under their belts and another on the way (planned for Sept,
2009), these boys are progressing with no lack of haste or fervor .
Their goals are twofold – to chase their dream of being
professional musicans persistently until they reach it, and to cultivate the
local rock scene around them as they do so. “We love the scene here and we want
nothing more than to see it grow in leaps and bounds. The attitudes of all the
bands here are so supportive. Thereis
so much talent, so much hard work and so much Aloha here, but there is comparatively
negligible support from radio or venues. But this just makes us that much
stronger as a whole. Anybody who makes it happen here already has a head start
compared to those who make it happen on the mainland. And we would love to see
everybody here get their chance to make it happen.”
We are the fastest growing concert production/ promotion company in
Hawaii. BAMP Project is on a mission to build a thriving musical
community in Hawaii. We are able to accomplish this by not only
bringing out bands that have a strong existing fan base, but also by
exposing Hawaii to the hot, upcoming bands that we feel will be the
next big thing. By consistently bringing quality entertainment, our
costumers are learning that even if they might not know a particular
band, they can count on us to know that if they attend the show, they
will leave feeling culturally enriched.
